Default Oh my, did you just give a Dahlback car your stamp of approval??

:-P, I have so much to learn, I wish I had such a vast knowledge of Audi's rally career, I've watched a bit of group b footage with Michelle Muton (sp) and Walter Rohl. (sp) But seeing as I wasn't even alive when they were competing, I suppose I have some catching up to do.

Ok, so I do have a stupid question, I know that Audi has used KKK turbos since the 80's (to say the least) So here's my stupid question, what does the (k)24/26/29 part of the turbo number have to do with? I know it has to be something to do with the cold end impeller size? What is the number a measurement of? Or is it a measurement of anything? I grasp the fact that the higher the # the larger the turbo is. Oh yea, and why are the k03's so "weak"?

Thanks,
Richard.

Yes the car is built extremely well. No corners were cut on that car. My only "beef" with it, and this is minor, is that predominantly its not an A2 according to the details, nor does it try to be one mechanically. I know this, because I have pretty much the best Ersatz A2 on the planet according to the details; However, that Dahlback car is definately a superior asphalt car in many ways. Very impressive.

The turbo thing is fairly simple until you can actually get exact numbers, but the main thing is that there are two families of turbos from KKK for Audi I5 motors. The first is the K24-K26 family of turbos. The second if the K27-28-29 family of turbos. These terms generally refer to the center section which is the heart of the turbo. So any hotside or coldside that fits a K24 center will fit a K26 center. The same is definately not true of matching a K27 to a K26. They're different. For instance, the turbine wheel nut on a K24/26 is a hex bolt. The turbine wheel not on a K27/28/29 is a 12pt bolt. The shaft diameters on the K27 is also larger than the K26. I have some pictures of K27/29 against K26(RS2) you can see the size difference immediately. The Audisport cars used the K27 family of turbos because that opens up a whole plethora of larger hotsides and compressor wheels that just aren't available with the K26 family. The largest and best K26 family turbo is the RS2 with a few one of exceptions that push it a bit further.

I don't know if you've seen this.
<img src="http://www.bufkinengineering.com/TURBOS01.JPG"> The center turbo is an RS2 comp. The back right is T04E/50 with K26#6, the Back left is a 3ldz, the flanking turbos are K29/K27#9 turbos from a pike's peak car.

One more pic. Stock Sport Quattro turbo on the left(K27(2750)/K27#7). The RS2(K26(2746)/K26#6) in the center and the (K29(3470)/K27#9) on the right.
