Anyone do a clutch in a 4KQ lately...

Mine's starting slip a bit under heavy load. I guess 210K miles is not bad for the original one. Was wondering how long it usually takes for your average shade tree mechanic to swap out including changing all the seals, slave and whatnot....
Debating getting rid of the old girl entierly and getting an new GTI or something else that does not require constant attention...hopefully.
Thanks

thats just about how long it took me to do the clutch/tranny swap on my 90q. the hardest part is getting the tranny out. i dont know if this goes for the 4k, but i had to remove the exhaust from downpipe back, front axles and drive shaft, sub frame, then get a jack stand under the engine to keep it up and a jack/tranny adapter under the tranny... unbolt the steering arms from the rack and put them aside, then unbolt the tranny. you need an alignment tool for the clutch (i just used the input shaft of the old tranny) and its friction disc, then pressure plate and tighten to spec in the patern they tell you to. make sure you replace the throw out bearing (you will see it once you remove the tranny) and now is also a good time to replace the slave cylinder. (oh yeah, make sure you remove the line to the slave and shift linkage before you try to drop the tranny). once your done doing the clutch, put everything back in and bleed the clutch. to bleed the clutch its like bleeding brakes, you pump the bubbles out into brake fluid, add some fluid, then once all gone, close the bleeder valve. before you goto put everything back on start the engine and see if you did it right (sometimes people tend to over look some things). careful when putting the linkage back together cuz its easy to over tighten a bolt and break it. then you would have to run out the boneyard, get all in the mud and rip off another one. have fun!!

I'm not sure if this is relevant but the clutch has rivets holding the lining in place. SO my guess is these could grove the flywheel if you wait to long.

Bentley says you need to remove the starter too... Others who paid a shop said they could get the job done for $700. To me that says about 7-8 hours of shop labor with all the right tools. A shade tree rule of thumb is double that if you've got good tools or triple it if you've never done the job before... Quattro trannys are heavy (100+ lbs) so you want an extra jack and a friend to help.

Takes me about 6 in shop on 4kq. at least double at home(I have compressor and mid rise lift)if not triple time. main reason i didn't put a turbo in mine is the added fun of turbo clutch job. For what its worth, the reason i got mine for cheap was the cost of clutch job at reputable shop around here(ove1k)
