Default anyone out there running a swiss cheese air box?

I drilled into mine sunday for ****s and giggles,5 1/2in holes on the cool side of the box. I'm still waiting on my K&N from blau so i'll have to wait to tell about the sound effects. The exhaust should be in by friday-borla 2 1/2 with mandrel bent pipe.

Default Just did it on Sunday!

It kicks ***! (sound wise)

For me, I didn't have any hole saws so I just used a 1" grinding stone (cone shaped) and fired my Dremel to full speed and started making tons of little holes everywere. It was messy because the stone basically just melted the holes and flung semi melted plastic all over the place, but it worked. There is now barely anything left of the lower half of the airbox. Litterally swiss cheesed.

I still have a regular air filter, but at WOT I can still hear the intake. Should sound even better with a K&N.

And don't worry about the "hot" side of the engine. Once you are moving forward most of the air under the hood is the same temp.

Watch out for large puddles or deep snow. Water in the fuel system is no fun.

Default Also take out the "flapper"

When I visited cuatrokoop and he installed my Jamex strut bar (supposed to install Jamex lower airbox too) he noted that I could leave out the flapper valve on the airbox. Its pretty much a thermostat in itself and shuts/opens when the temp warms up/cools down. This will let more air in, and its free, 3 screws hold it on.
I have a swiss cheese box and I just sold my K&N filter (stock ones are fine).
Hopefully the results are promising!

Default I did mine a few years ago..........

It works great, I to have a K&N filter... I have herd that green stuff filters work better than K&N, My local speed shop has a demo with a ball, The green stuff let in more air... I will be ordering one for my A4 soon..... As for the swiss cheese air box in my coupe I never got water in there even running through 2 ft of water back in college with the guys... Ah the good ol days........

Default Did mine a while ago

I cut most of the fender side out (no holes drilled). Sounds neat, performs meh.. I don't know if it helped at all or not.

Is it better to punch holes in both sides? or just the outside wall?
