Default Audi quattro gearbox strength

Does anyone know what the torque limits are for an Audi 5 speed quattro gearbox?

Specifically, if you wanted to put ~350 lb-ft of torque through an Audi 5-speed reliably under racing conditions, would a stock 4000q transmission be up to the job? Are the 5000t/200 or S-car gearboxes stronger?

Appreciate any info or sources of info!

Jon,

I looked at the codes and they are different for the cars you mentioned.
Which makes me assume that they are beefier versions.

If I had to guess, your best bet would be from a 91 200 (20V turbo), or from an S-car. It is not uncommon to see these cars with 300+ ft/lbs, may be other people can give you a better answer.

Also, try to post at the list in www.audifans.com

Good luck,

TS

ps. are you going to switch your diet from rice to sauerkraut?

Default You're not gonna break it. Go ahead and try.

Almost every UrQ owner that races used a 4kq gearbox and rear diff(closer gearing in the box, 4.11 final drive instead of 3.89), and they stand up fine to the abuse of racing and rallying. The difference between the 4k 'box and the turbo cars is the gearing. If you're going to be racing it, stick with the 4k, it's geared a good bit closer and you'll be happier with that on the track.

Default Actually, I was thinking some of each...

I have plenty of sauerkraut in my past, but unless I stumble upon a nice Sport Quattro, I'll stick with my Scooby for now.

I have access to a couple of 4000q drivetrains, as well as access to a guy who can weld anything and has a big hammer. There's at least one high-HP Impreza driving around with a quattro drivetrain--maybe I'll be the second. The layout is really very similar.

Thanks for the info.
