OK, I'm confused. Please help me out. Can someone explain terms like 'Type 85" Are all Coupe GTs Type 85? Are they all based on the B2 platform? Or are the 85-87s on the B3?

85-87 are based on the B2 platform, at least in Europe they were...
The type 85 name is based on the car's engine...if it's a 4 banger, then it's a type 81, if it's a 5 banger then it's a type 85...this is why 4ks are type 81 and 4kQs are type 85...at least this is what I've understood of these type names...

the european 4 cylinder versions are type 81 as the type 81 has been used from a certain point to differentiate 4 cylinder car from 5 cylinder one...one exception though (damn, Audi always have a lot of exceptions!!!) is the european Audi 90 type 81 which is a fwd type 81 limo (Audi 4000s) but with 5 cylinders! Go figure their logic!! I think they had none at all!

The A1 platform officially ran from '75-'84, but the Scirocco was A1 until its demise in 1992('88 in America), and the Cabriolet was A1 up until '93! Plus, the Scirocco was the only American A1 to get anything but a standard 1.8l; it was the test chassis for the 16v engine.
