It still remains to be seen how many new cars are going to be on the road in 20 years. Their complexity pretty much means they're disposible. As soon as the electronics and such start to go bad, their repair costs will rapidly cover the value of the car, and they can't be worked on without thousands of dollars in special Audi tools.
There was a recent thread in the b6 A4 forum having a noob Audi owner thrashing old audis. He deleted his thread, but really came down hard on older Audis. He was amazed that people would talk about their 10 year old POS.. He was in a '02 1.8T CVT A4 (like thats a great car??). I guess what he doesn't realize is that the great beauty in seeing old cars on the road is the fact that its old, still running and in great condition. Devotion like that makes classics and one day, he'll wake up and see that those 10 year old "POS"s have turned into 20+ year old classics.
With that being said.
Seeing as how Audis were only available here in the US from the late 70s. In 10-15 more years, the old 4000s and such will truly be welcome sights at Quattro club meetings (first AWD, 4 door passenger saloon). And the 01 CVT A4's will be littering the junkyards by the thousands.
I'm seeing this from both sides, and am being objective as possible. I drive a 2001 A8L as my daily driver. But I have two UrQuattros that I prize very highly above the A8L.
If I was there on that cruise as a guest.. I would have asked to ride as a passenger in one of the 4000s! At any one instance when given two possibilities in life, always take the one that offers the most unique and rare experience. All the other New cars don't even come close in that category. Yes, I would have been in a 4000 without a doubt.

All the pics look awesome. Wish I could have been there. Next time hopefully! Do you have a good shot of all three old school cars together? I think it would make a great background for my computer!

It's like VCR's and DVD players. Used to, you'd take it to a shop to fix it. Now, you just throw them away and get a new one because they're so cheap. I can sort of see cars eventually getting that way, at least it appears that people are getting into that mentality. It's probably the fault of leasing! On the other hand, cars are still a pretty expensive purchase, so I think for a while it will be better to fix it than to throw it away. The old cars may be clunky, noisy, rattly, but my '00 A4 just doesn't have the feel that my 4ks has. The best cars were made in the 80's!
