Default Broken odometer question...

I was checking out Huw's Audi site on this subject. According to his write-up the older odometers can be "fixed" pretty easily without replacing anything, but the newer ones have a small plastic gear that needs to be replaced. I was just wondering if anyone knows if a '86 4000CS uses the older odometer or the newer one. If it uses the newer one I'll order the gear before I take it apart so that I can do it in one shot. In other words, I'd rather not take it apart to find out and then have to put it back together while I wait for the gear to arrive in the mail. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Default Ive repaired many and never replaced any gears

Normally the shaft slides out and loses contact with the worm gear. There is another gear that can cause issues, its the top most gear and counts for the OXS light, remove that silly gear.

I always put a piece of metal at the end of the shaft to keep it from backing out, seemed to work pretty good. Cheap, easy, and free fix!

Default One other thing.

It certainly doesn't hurt the longevity of it to use a little graphite powder as well to help assist the turning of the gears. I had one split the gear after pushing it back in and puting a spacer in to not allow it back out

Now I put some graphite powder lube in there to make sure things turn freely.

Default I fixed my 87 4K about 5 yrs ago. No new parts. Just clamped hard ...

on the drive shaft with pliers to create a splined surface. The gear slid on a little hard, but hasn't been a problem since.

Can you describe that "top most gear and counts for the OXS light"? Is it the cirular piece on the outside, has a circular spring, colored black and has two springed prongs?
