I was reading some of the recent post and associated web pages on timing belt replacement. Some of them said broken timing belt can result in piston to valve collisions.
I'm pretty sure this is not the case with the 2144cc 5cyl in the older coupes. The engines just have enough internal clearance so the stuff wont touch even if the belt breaks.
Maybe as the compression ratios started creeping up at about 1985 the piston / valve collisions became possible. Does anyone know for sure if any of the 5 cylinder motors are at risk of serious damage if the belt breaks.

I'm pretty sure the 4cyl are interference. I seen an A4 bend a valve due to a bad tensionor. Though Audi's don't tank like VW's due. You can tell if you damaged a valve on an Audi it won't run that well cold. Once it warms up its fine. VW on the other hand, and i know from first hand experience on a 16v scirocco, timing belt breaks, bye bye valves (all 16, crap).
