buying a 1987 4000s, god i miss these cars
only rust was on the hood edge, ran a little rough but some cleaning and seafoam sounds like the ticket, brand new tires(cant pass that up, working a/c compressor and sunroof, forgot the milage but prolly is low from what i was hearing how often it was driven, only a 1.8 but gets 25 mpg daily which i wont bitch about
ill get a some pictures next week, i'm glad to be in the 4000 family again
oh and only 1500 which sounds steep but whatever

Cool! The price is actually not bad if it's in as good of shape as it sounds.
The 1.8 is my favorite non-turbo VW engine. There's quite a bit you can do with it for more power. I just swapped the large intake and throttle body onto the one in my Audi Fox and it roars. Eventually I'd like to do higher-compression pistons too.
You should see what engine code it has, you might already have those mods.
Seafoam is great, BUT sometimes these engines have leaky seals that are being plugged up by old gunk, which Seafoam will clean out, so be prepared in case "new" leaks show up.
Usually you can count on vacuum leaks or a gunky fuel system for rough running, which doesn't take much to fix.
Don't forget the pics!

I had good results on my 84 4ks by lifting the top boot off the sensor plate cleaning the plate area and the little screen with carb cleaner. It went from the dark brown/black to shiney plus the screen was mostly clogged with sooty gunk. That cleared out a progressively rougher and dropping idle issue.
Sounds like its in good shape.

so its bought and mine, dumb *** told me the odo. worked, not broke at 120k, speedo works, birhgts switch doesnt activate, little rust i didnt notice on rear fender but not cancerous yet, seafoamed the intake mainfold and oil case and my rough idle went away, the exhaust leak was from a stupid flex pipe, it still has the secondary muffler(gotta lose it), the waterpump pulley wiggles a little but doesnt overheat, sunroof works, ect. ect
my main thing is the tranny mounts are shot but that should be easy since it looks like the exact setup as my 83 CGT i had if my eyes dont decieve me,
he had seat covers that stuck like hell, a little ozium and removed the covers, holly **** the cloth seats are in great shape, shifter is great except the clutch has too much slack and seems stiff coming back up, ill post pics tomorrow hopefully
oh and the parking brakes seem like they are slightly stuck but im hoping a littl ehammer tap while pop that lose with a little wd-40 i found thats for rusty stuck parts

nice buy!
its relatively the same as my car. Stone grey metalic paint, quatz grey interior (i think). you also have different rims and your front seats look much nicer than mine
