I have a 86 4k cs quattro and it started to burn oil recently. I am thinking it might be the piston rings but I am not sure. my question is how hard would it be to fix it myself or am I better off taking it to a shop?

Most likley, the stem seals are leaking and oil is getting past the guides.
Get/rent a compression tester check all the cylinders HOT! How consistant are the numbers from cyl. to cyl? Are they within spec?
Spray some WD40 in the cylinders (one at a time) and repeat,
Did the numbers go up alot? Or just on one or two cylinders?
The WD40 will help the rings seal, if they're bad then compression will go up, If there's little chage then your valves aren't sealing very well.
Most likley you need a valve job.

resurface the head, leak test, new guides, seals, reseated valves, etc. It might not have been the best deal, but there was no doubt it was done right.
just sold that head for $90 two months ago...

ok you can burn oil from oil leaks from 3 possible places
1 rings... This will be eveident by blue smoke under load ie when you floor it.
2 valve guides ,, thes will be evident by blue smoke when you are under vacume,,ie compression brakeing,,ie running engine no throttle going down hill.
3, head gasket. This will problaby show as other head gasket problems ie water in oil or oil in water, leaking cylinder.
you can verify rings by injecting oil into cylinder.. NO disrespect to previous person howver the suggestion of WD 40 is not recommended.WD40 is to thin and will wash down oil and show a leak where non exixts, plus the other chemicals in WD 40 have no busniesss inside your Cylinders. if compression imkproves substantically, its rings othewise its one of the other 2.
worn valves will show as low compression also, but that will not cause oil burning.
