the 4KQ wouldn't start this AM. Cranked fast with a whiff of fuel. It recently started to idle badly when first started and has a warm idle problem. I guess I'm gonna start with the spark and do a tune up (getting close to 240K miles so its due, plus its been really wet in the east and the quat sleeps outside). Been meaning to replace the CSV and ISV since I have some clean ones but was wondering if those can cause a no start condition too. Too many possibilities for a car that old (ie fuel pump relay etc). Sorry for the venting, I wasn't planning on having to do all this spark/fuel analysis while I redo the suspension...

At lunchtime 4 hours later, I tried again and bingo, it starts right up, runs for 15 seconds, stumbles then stalls. Starts right up again, I blib the throttle and then it settles into a nice 1000 rpm idle. So I am thinking CSV or a vacuum leak... any other ideas?

When was the last time you changed the ECU temp sender? Can't remember if it's the top or the bottom one on the neck that leads to the top of the rad, but when these get flaky cold starts become a game of chance. The other stuff in this thread also should get checked out, as well as standard cap/rotor/plugs etc...
CSV's _rarely_ fail, they're too simple, plus if it starts right up you're pretty much assured it's working. Easy to check, too, just don't set yourself/your car on fire. The stuff that _controls_ the csv can go bad though- check the starter wiring. Mine came apart when I touched it. One would think Audi should know better, but the quality of the wiring on these cars is really lackluster...

This is the first time ANYTHING in the FI system has messed up - in 18 years and 240K miles!! I am also going to start replacing the vacuum lines and check out the tees for cracks - I believe the black braided ones are 3.5mm ID (let me know if I am wrong)... I am also wondering if the ECU may be getting flaky. Do they commonly get intermittants or just kaboom?
