Default CIS-E people... what does the potentiometer do?

I was messing around with a few things trying to fix the dieseling I'm experiencing, and I disconnected my potentiometer harness from the potentiometer. I turned on the car, and it ran fine, no difference at all. I didn't actually try to DRIVE it like that, but just standing still the engine revs up and down fine, I can't tell any difference.

So what is the purpose of the potentiometer?

quoting directley from my 1984 Audi service training information manual on the new CIS-E fuel injection, " the potentiometer is used to measure the position of the sensor plate, this signal is supplied primarily for cold acceleration enrichment" hope that helps.
