Default Actually... In rare circumstances the converter can make enough heat that it can melt your carpet!
YMMV... I have seen a coverter start a brush fire... if it were me - I'd probably due without the shield.

Default I've heard of that happening. Never actually seen it, though.
That would tell me there's something wrong with the cat; it should never get that hot.

Default no that's how they work...
The CATalyst inside reacts with all the pollutants your car puts out. It causes a heat reaction!
