Default Yes way, synthetic banned from my garage

New lifters, lifter tap with full oil begins at round 1500 miles. Neither Mobil 1 nor Amsoil made any difference.
Synth also likes to leak out wherever it can. It didn't care for my drain plug seal.
I can get at least the same mileage if not more out of standard dino oil (20-50 Wolf's Head right now) and not pay 2.5 times as much for something that gave zero benefit.
And don't even ask me how noisy those lifters were after a hill climb run. They could hear me coming before they saw me.
Synth is a good product, but NOT for Audis.

In my opinion, the syn isn't worth the extra cost.

Default Re: How about a Castrol 20W-50 Non-Synthetic??? Is synthetic really worht the extra cost?

That's been my success story for years. I have a 4kq with 254k that uses no oil, no smoke or leaks.
My mistake was when I decided to put Mobil 1 (for older vehicles) in my quattro coupe. Looks like water going in and now she leaks liquid gold out of the rear main seal. Time to drain it and go back to the real stuff. 5 quattros run to over 240k on 20/50 and never a worn engine. Just my 2 cents worth.

Default You should not like the idea that deposits hold your gaskets/seals together.

I switched to Amsoil and the car ran smoother and still doesn't consume oil. Its up to you, but one day those deposits will be gone.

Default Its good for high speed,

When I had normal oil in my 4000csq, and I would drive on the interstate perhaps at 85 mph for 4 hours, the oil would literally disintegrate, smell really bad and stick to the oil dip stick. When I switched over to Mobil 1 synthetic European car forumla, no more oil breakdown. It also quieted my lifter tick. Pretty good stuff and worth every cent if you ask me

at this point, I'd say stick with what works. Why shock the engine?

Default M1 0w-30 would cause lifter chatter in my A4 at startup...

when I switched to 5w-30, the chatter went away though.

Do you check the oil again when that tapping starts, you may just be burning off oil. I do have to top off the oil between changes to keep the oil level at the top of the fill mark on the dip stick.

> New lifters,
Did you soak the lifters in oil before you installed them? that can have damage the lifters if you didn't, although unlikely.

> And don't even ask me how noisy those lifters were after a hill climb run
That also could have been caused by not enough oil or more likely valve stem blow by which was a problem that my brother had on his 85 coupe.

> Synth also likes to leak out wherever it can.
Ya, that is a problem when switching to M1 because it has detergents in it that strip away any oil deposits and consequently any deposit that is making a oil seal. Now I personally think that it is a good thing to get ride of your oil deposits rather than leave them in the engine, so I do not mind having to fix an oil leak.

> but NOT for Audis
I can not believe anyone would say that just because your Audi did not like it. You and I own the same car and have the same engine and I can tell you that my car loves it and my lifters make less noise with M1 than they did with regular oil (or so the last owner said) How much experience do you have with M1? Is this your first try at using it??? I personally have rebuild engines with and without M1 use and I can tell you from that experience that M1 is more than worth its wait in gold.

Bottom line is that M1 is a far superior motor oil and when used from the start of a cars life will provide long live and protection. Now it may not be the best for a car with over 150,000 miles on it but it is a better oil. Don't take my word on it just ask around and see how many people us it.
