My 84 4KQ either has a bad center bearing or a bad bearing in the tranny so I started pricing out new trannys. I asked Chris at Force5 what's with the model years - and he said the only difference between an 84 4KQ tranny and the 85-87 is that the 84 has a bowden cable set up to control the center diff. So if I replace the cable too an 85-87 tranny works in an 84. That also implies all the gear ratios are the same...

THe center bearign is in the 50-60 dollar range (maybe even cheaper. See an earlier thread for the exact replacement BMW part number)
It's sure a lot easier (and less $) to change the bearing than to change than the transmission .
Symptoms of a bad center bearing are a weird 'howling' noise that's only speed related (power doesn't affect the noise).
Noise may also go away at higher speeds, or after you've been driving a while.

a while back I picked up a used drive shaft from a parted out car for $20 on ebay (local too, no shipping). Nice thing is it came with clean bolts - I have a feeling its gonna get ugly as two the bolts are already stripped inside on mine.

Cut off the heads. I use a die grinder, I bet a dremel would do it as well, only slower. once the heads are off, the stress is removed and they wind out by hand or with pliers. BTDT.

"84 is ever so-slightly shorter ratios."
...in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears. Despite some bad info floating around out there, the final ratios are the same.
Also the 84 has different flange diameters, not a bolt-in without changing them out.

three reasons, in fact, that make it more desireable then any other 4kq tranny...
(for some uses)
As for the output flanges, easy swap...just drain the fluids first.
