I don't remember who asked about control arms last week, but I have a revised answer to their question.
I incorrectly stated the side with the raised bumps where the ball joints went in were on the "top" side.
Well, today braving sub-zero temperatures, I ventured outside to my parts shed where I had a complete front sub frame in storage. After examing the sub frame I came across an absolutely ingenious bit of Audi engineering.
It appears that the control arms can go on either side just by flipping over. Both the top and bottom half of the control arms are identical stampings welded together to give you a universal control arm.
Hope this helps your control arm identification issues.
PS I think I also stated that the memory is the first thing to go at my age.

A). the sway bar link will not fit (bushing will point the wrong way if you flip the opposing arm)
B). the ball joint will not fit (it has couple of grooves that will only go one way into the CA)
This is why they have specific P/N!
Now... early CAs are no problem..they are not side/side sensitive.
That's all folks..

BTW.
Also, you can use front arms in the rear on either side unless you have a rear sway bar that uses the links that attach the control arm. If you DO have a sway bar with the links that attach to the control arm then you can flip the front right to left rear and front left to right rear.
