Default Fuel Distributer Issues, '84 4000s

Ok Audi ran like crap for a month before we got some parts to try and fix it. Would take 15+ start-ups when cold to actually keep it running, and had to drop 2 gears on any hill, couldnt go more than 40mph on the hills I used to do 70-80mph on. Changed the fuel filters also. Found out the O-Ring between the fuel distributer and air box assembly was shot so we replaced that, still ran aweful so we also replaced the fuel distributor. Here is where it gets weird to us.

The two screws that hold the distributor on to the air box we can crank down on and tighten, but if we do the car wont run/start, but back them off 1/2 turn and it will run fine. This would be alright but when you run it from point a to b the screw loosens and makes it run worse and even unable to start once shut off.

Revs to about 2k when running fine, and will spike between 800-1400 rpms. Why cant we tighten these 2 screws down?

Default Hmmm

Are you talking about the screws that hold the fuel distributor to the top of the airbox? There should be alot more than two of them.
No vacuum = no fuel.
Id start there.

I misspoke, they hold it to the air flow meter. They both have flat head screwdriver ends on them.

Default What you are calling the 'fuel distributor'...

What you are calling the 'fuel distributor':

Is that a grey box at the front of the fuel metering unit, wiht a 2 wire connector off to the engine side of it?

Pull everything back apart. Make sure the threads in the airflow meter housing are not striped. Make sure the piston in the distributor is free and not binding. Lube the o-ring with gasoilne and put everything back.

It sounds like the piston may be binding or not able to travel the full range, and therefore not allowing the distributor to sit down all the way

The fuel lines come out of the top of the fuel distributor and go to the injectors. It sits on top of the Air box.

Default About 7 years, also some updates

Got it from my uncle who was the original owner and I have been driving it since 12, learning how to drive stick and such. No pics. Just looks like a silver 4000s with a small dent in the front driver door.

Ok we took the air flow bugger off, cleaned the plunger (nothin was sticking and checked the gap), cold start valve is spraying fuel into the manifold, we have blue spark, compression, but the plugs dont look very wet. Any ideas

All the lines are sealed, no vaccume leaks at all. I even went over the intake lines with WD-40 to see if it had a vac leak. The cold start valves looks like a mist when you turn the engine over.
