the city on me when my cgt was up on jack stands for most the summer. but they didn't say anything last year when i had the suburban up for a month while i parted it out.
i think more would complain if wasn't the neighborhood go to guy. lawn mower doesn't run, they bring it to me, scooter isn't running, comes to me, car trouble, me, hauling dirt/rock/whatever, me. f someone needs some tools, it's me they come to. helk i even have a air hose real on the outside of the garage with 150" of hose so it will reach well across the street for anyone that has to air up a tie or whatever. the neighborhood kids just swing in to air up their bike tires.
i leave a blow gun end and an air tire end hanging on the garage as well. a couple weeks ago i came home and someone was using it to blow out their locks and door jambs after a car wash.
i don't mind it a bit and i guess it's a pretty good trade off to keep the city off my back.

The neighbors are cool about it, lots of little kids in the area now and most are very curious. I get the "hey mister, whatcha doin?" a lot and the grown ups usually make comments too, like "man, that guys doin some serious work.." I'll even get the occasional passer by asking if I can work on their car for them.

Francis and Andrew (the neighbours on the driveway side...a couple in their 90's) had no problems with my addicion - I'd be out hammering on my 1980 5k at 2 in the morning without complaint (Andrew was deaf, Francis' bedroom was away from the driveway). Francis passed away while we were building "The Hangar" (= garage addition) and since then the new neighbours have been protected from noisy 2am outdoor wrenching.
Cheers!

I think they all find it rather intriguing to be honest with you.
When I parted out the 200:

and started rebuilding the 4000 the first time, I found people would actually stop by and ask me how it was going (and I had no idea who they were or if they lived on the street!).
When I got the 4000 running, I had one pull up and congratulate me on finishing the car.
Overall, they're really cool about it. Though I'm sure they get a bit weirded out at times, I'm pretty good about what I do and don't make too much noise or mess to disturb them too too much.
I did get a few raised eyebrows from my next door neighbor when I pitched the tarp tent at the end of my garage to work in the rain though :-P

one was a F350 box truck and my mailman wanted to know if I could help him make a running astro van out of two he had (one w/ a blown motor, other w/ a blown trans). Couldn't help but laugh at that and respectfully decline. I don't want the liability if something went wrong.
