Saab used a pull up ring. GM used a "T" lever that pulled up. VW, BTW, also uses the same system, although they are technically the same company. I don't think many companies that sell in the US even give it much thought anymore, as less than 5% of the new cars sold in the US last year had manual transmissions.
BTW, I'm in for one for the 4kq. Possibly two, depending on cost.

Cut off the end of the shift rod & the ball joint it attached to, threaded the shift rod, and attached an adjustable heim link. Takes an inch or so out of the throw. Costs around $10.
