Default Has anyone recovered their seating?

I'm so sick of my seat covers.Original seating is really gone, lots of rips/tears to the cloth, and I've had make-do covers pon since Carsile '04. A while ago, I priced leather seating recoverings..... and backed off as the seating was tooooo pricy for the whole thing. [$800.- + for just the fronts].

Now I'm tempted to get naugahyde coverings. It's a whole lot less $$$$, and readily available in the color of my choice.

Any thoughts?

Default Re: Has anyone recovered their seating?

It's not primarily the material. It's the labor to actually upholster the seats. $400 a seat sounds like a bargain basement quote. I would question how close that quote is to the original look of the seats. (if you care about detail like that) Sometimes, the non-OEM stitching looks like crap when finished. (incorrect location of seams, seams missing etc)

As far as material.....I dont imagine that would affect cost to severly. Keep in mind, aside from handpicked "exotic" materials (leather usually privatly sourced)......you don't get much bang for your buck these days material wise. Vat-dyed solvent based finish leather (OEM baby, the GOOD stuff!!!) has not been widely produced since the EPA crackdown in 1989. The waterbased leather hides most upholstery shops use now-adays are just like leatherette. (the cheap immitation leather) I practically cant tell the difference between the two.

You may want to check Leatherseats.com and call. (they don't list all the seatcovers they produce) They do OEM quality stitchwork. Materials are optional. VERY high quality, I have verifyed this in person over here in BMW land. Nice Stuff.

But yeah, these seats totally suck to dimantle, too. I dont think you'll find much cheaper than $400.00 beans to open one up and fix it. And like I said if you do.....will they even be nice in the end?

Default Thought about just doing an interior swap?

This may be alot more cost effective, depending on what your looking for. Seat covers came with my 4kq when I got it (ripped CE whorehouse red leather).
I found a nice set of quattro script seats and havnt looked back, but I do miss how eye catching the red leather was.
Id suggest sourcing some other stock seats if thats what your after. The cloth seats hold up realllly well for the most part.

Default Yeah, I thought about that>>>

That price was me buying the leather seat covers, removing the seats, taking them in to the reupholstry shop [and not telling them it's from an audi- those guys go "ka-ching!" when you drive up in an audi- so I'm told] and me re-installing the seats.

I can do the same thing, front and back in naugahyde for about 650.-

Default I've looked around...

But havn't found anything that I wanted. My interior is a dark brown, can't seem to find a drak brown cloth that is in any better shape than mine. Dark brown leather is non-existant.

Default Is it the whole interior?

If I went with black, I'd need the door panels, carpet, all seating. Black would be OK.... however I'll need all of it.

Really, I'm just talking about it. With Christmas coming up I'm looking around for after the new year.

I've got mint brown cloth seats from my 84 KQS that I removed a while ago after replacing with Recaros. If interested send me an email.
