Default help with high gas consumption and stalling

Okay, this question is for a friend's 1984 5000s, but seeing how it uses the same 2.2L 5-cylinder, I figure i might as well ask here as well...

The car has recently began to experience high gas consumption (i.e. about 10mpg), and tends to stall on turns. Also, there is a strong scent of gas coming from the exhaust, which leads me to suspect that something is wrong with the O2 Senors, which creates an overly-rich mixture.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone ever tried to replace the O2 sensors on their own? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Default O2? Doubt it

A bad O2 wouldn't cause his gas mileage to drop that low. Mine hasn't been changed in years (read: very old) and I still get about 24-26 on the freeway. Something else is wrong there.

Default Several things...

An O2 can be a very likely suspect, I've seen them wreak havoc on CIS when they do burn out. Maybe not THAT bad, but anything's possible. Tell him to check the airflow sensor plate, make sure it's not binding, the fuel mixture, etc. Another thing...this is very rare, but it does happen. Check the plug on the ECU, sometimes the terminals can get water in them and expand, causing the pins to become loose and making the car run pretty much as you've described. How's the power on this one doing? Still good, or barely there? If it's barely there, this could be suspect. I saw a guy with a 16v GTI(rated 123hp) who had this problem dyno out with 45hp(!), and the same consumption/emissions symptoms you've outlined.

Default Ya, my CPU fried out once

On the 4kq's water can drip onto the wiring and fill the CPU casing shorting it out! Amazing but true. When mine did that, it was blowing white smoke, lurching with NO power and acted like it had horribly bad gas (which I suspected). The amazingly competent mechanic that found this out said there was over 8oz of water in there!

Default Gotta agree here...

I've been driving my 5000 without a O2 sensor for about 2 months. I've seen about a 2-3 MPG difference than normal.

Either something is seriously wrong or that 5000 has a couple of bad systems working together with a bad O2 sensor to cause that low of a MPG...
