I have always wanted to convert the brake lights on the trunk of my 4kq into dedicated fogs like you have on your CGT.

Im not worried about losing the use of them as parking/brake lights because they have never worked on mine plus I like the look of just the outer lights for brake/parking use better. my main question is, what bulb and recepticle did you use. I plan on relaying them to a factory fog light switch, I just need some details at the lighting end of it to point me in the right direction. TIA

First, the lights in the trunk lid aren't brake lights. They are just more taillights. I tried to convert the driver's side to a rear fog by the following:
- I ran +12V and a wire that was connected to a switch back to the trunk lid.
- I replaced the 5W bulb with a 21W bulb.
- I used a power resistor (forget the value) in series with the 21W bulb so that it would normally give the same light output as the old 5W bulb.
- I then wired a relay in parallel across the reistor, so that when I flipped the switch in the car, the relay would short out the resistor and give me the full 21W output of the bulb.
- I used standard crimp connectors so that it was easily reversible.
Problems:
- The relay solder joints eventually broke, so I just went back to stock.
- Although the light is brighter, that lens/reflector is not really suited to a rear fog application. Usually rear fogs, have less diffusion of the light in the lens and has a good reflector so that you get a penetrating beam out the back.
- Really what you get is a brake light type result, which is interesting because you could make a nice set of extra brake lights.
Another alternative is to use one of the reverse lights. I think they are slightly better focused, but then you need a red bulb of some type.

First I cut out the plastic area on the light bar with a cutting wheel, then I went to auto zone and got a $20 set of fog lights, took off the glass and glued then in place they fit almost perfect, the top and bottom don't fit all the way over the opening on the light bar but I thought it would let the heat out so I left it open. Then I wired them up to a switch on my dash and there you go : ) The blue swiches at the bottom of my center dash, One for front and one for the back fog lights...

Yes, I know that, but the rear fog on my A4 is not diffused like the brake lights. The lens is clearer and it puts a pretty intense light out the back to penetrate the rain and fog.
