How do you keep mice out of a car while stored? Preferably something that you know from experience.

about mouse heaven. we have had this camper parked there for 5 years now, it never moves. we have not had a single mouse in it. i also stored cars when i lived in the country and never had a problem keeping them out.
here's what i do:
buy a ton of downy (yes the downy brand, i think it works better due to the heavy scent) drier sheets and a bunch of course steel wool, the courser the better. put the drier sheets all over the interior and tuck them under the dash, around wiring you can get to and under the seats. stuff some in the crack of the back seat. load some in the trunk, around the fender wells. put some around the engine compartment. a popular place for mice is in the cowl area under the hood. put alot in there.
take the steel wool (course because mice can't chew threw the thicker steel strands) and stuff it in any hole, crack, and crevice. mice can completely flatten there bodies, so get even the small ones. they can also climb anything, so get the high stuff as well. stuff the steel wool in tight enough and thick enough that a mouse couldn't just pull it out (the courser stuff helps with that also). make sure you get the tailpipe stuffed with it.
you can't use too much steel wool or downy sheets.
now, if the car's going to be stored for a long time (more than 3-4 months) there's a couple more things you can do. elevate the car 6-8" of the ground or higher. mice can jump, but this does keep some other critters away, and the mice may not want to bother if the downy scent is strong enough. this also helps to keep your tires from gaining any flat spots, even if they go flat.
next, depending on if you live in a cold area or not, you can open the hood. just pop it. make sure it is still latched so the wind can't take it. just that small crack of the popped hood will help keep mice out of the engine compartment. the mice are looking for a warm place to go, if it's not warm, they won't stay long.
these are just a few tips i've learned from storing campers, having a camper at deer camp, storing cars, lawn tractors, tractors, trailers, and several other things i don't want mice and other critters in.
