How do you adjust the headlights on a 1986 coupe. On each light there are two philips screws which will not budge and there appears to be four more screws (square holed) with springs (two at the top and two at the bottom) that have rocker mechanisms at the back of the unit. Which are the adjusters.

Judging by your description of the headlights i'm working on the assumption that you have European H1/H4 headlights.
It's a bit time consuming, but i'd HIGHLY reccomend taking the light fixtures out to do some R+R. The adjustment screws are brass and extremely easy to cam out (if the aren't already) - thus necessesitating costly replacement of the adjusters. I had to get a few replacement adjusters and the rockers shipped imported to the states and it cost me over $50US. They tend to get funky green corrosion which is easily removed with a wire brush, and then the screws should be lubed. Also it will give you a chance to figure out what each adjuster does. To remove the headlight fixtures there are four machine screws. Two on the top of the horizontal sheetmetal just under the hood, and two under the assmeblies, kind of deep in which will require a long phillips screwdriver.
I can't tell you what each adjuster does off the top of my head.
