Default How much have you recently paid for an air conditioner recharge?

I was quoted between $120 to $175 for my 86 4ks.
Seems like robbery to me - must be because it's hot outside.
a**holes.

Default Have you converted or still using Freon?

I was told by a dealer that the price for Freon keeps going up and is really expensive now. R134A costs about $10 a can (2-3 fill a system) but if you decide to convert, you need to replace all the O-rings and should leak test first to do it right (or you'll lose it all in a few weeks). Sounds like you have a leak already so if you are being charged to get that fixed, the price seems right.

Default Still using Freon. The last charge was about 2 1/4 years ago.

How much do you think the conversion (w/ test )
would cost?

Default Thats cheap.

Most shops will charge the basic 'ac service charge' Which covers the time involved to hookup gauge set and recycle unit. R134a is going up rather quickly especially now in the summer months when everyone wants it...and due to the fact that new refrigerants are always a threat (to replace ozone depleting refrigerants). 134a is 32 dollars per pound around here, And will go as high as 40. Most systems hold 1.5-3.0 lbs.

If your lucky enough to have someone that will charge it with R12, expect to pay MORE. R12 (which is no longer available, except from shops that recycle it) can be seen for as much as 75-95 per pound. More than likely (of course depends on the shop) your car will be converted to an R12 compatible refrigerant. Ask what they are using so you know. An R12 compatible refrigerant (IE freezone) wont require a full retrofit (IE orings/reciever drier etc), and cools very well for the cost.

goodluck with your ac!
