Default As I feared, Tranny Oil looks like motor oil. :(

From what I've read, ths is common for auto trannies. The seal goes between the two systems. Now how hard is it to replace it? Does it involve pulling the entire tranny/engine/final drive out? Or is it easier to junk the car? I would rather try to fix it, as I've done so much to this car in the month I've owned it.

But... the tranny is working perfectly. Not slipping, nothing smells burnt (fluid), shifts fine. Could it be possibly filled with the yellow tranny fluid? and that's why it looks yellowish?

Thanks.

Default Just out of curiousity...

How do you have an '87 4ks with a 2.2l and automatic? Was it imported from Canada? I never thought Audi imported the 4ks with a 5 cyl aside from the 5+5 cars in the early 80s. Just curious.
As for your tranny, I would flush it out, change the filter and put fresh fluid in it. Cross your fingers that the engine oil isn't leaking into the tranny. I think there was even a recall on the transmission oil in the automatic 4000s. Call Audi and check to see if that was performed.
All the luck!

Default I live in Canada

Thanks for the tips on calling Audi about the recall.

Can recalls still be performed at no charge for such old cars?

Default Oh I see!

I don't know about the recalls longevity but you can probably look it up online. The link here is to alldata and all they list for recall is the 1.8l, 4cyl for the fluid recall. That could only be for the US market so you may actually be included.

http://www.alldata.com/TSB/870503_en.html</a

Default It's not engine oil!!! It's gear oil from the diff that's leaking into the trans!!!

It was fairly common on the 5000's with the auto trans (it happened to my old mans 5000T).
One of the recalls on that website was for the diff oil evaporating, they replaced it with synthetic diff oil:

CMPGGS MAR 93 Recall - Differential Oil Change, A/T 087 & 089
CMPGGS JAN 93 Recall - A/T, Differential Oil Replacement

Some 5000's have a big red sticker in the engine bay stating that the oil has to be checked regularly and topped up or the diff will be ruined!

Default Same recall applied to all 3-spds....might be able to get it fixed free

I had a typ89 with that thranie. The previous owner never did the recall, so I did (car was a 1988 and this was in 1994). Well, soon after the recall work, the tranie died. Audi replaced it at NO CHARGE even that late (obviously no warranty at that point). All I had to pay for was the hoses (they would have reused the old ones if I didn't buy new ones). So for around $300 I got a new tranie...
