After who knows how many abusive years, I am trying to restore hp.
I want to know some good places to start.
Any advice would be great.

Give it a full service. All the filters, fresh oil, cap, rotor, leads, plugs, and O2 sensor (if equipped). That will usually add some zip again.
If the plugs look really blackened some folks have good things to say about a seafoam treatment.

after that, move on to advancing the timing a bit (~+12*) unless it has already been advanced. Add's a bit of oomph to the ol' girl.
Im in the same battle as you with my 350+k mile 84 4kq.. but after replacing some vac lines / tubing and doing the timing she woke up a whole lot.
