Default I think the time has come........

I've been thinking and I just don't have the time or money to put into this car and do the things that I'd like to do. Honestly, I just can't bring myself to investing into something that will never give me a return, financially. I usually don't look at my cars as "investments." This is a big no-no if you're into cars. Unless you're a car dealer, my experience has always been to never get into cars for the sole purpose of making money. Have fun and enjoy what you're doing. But, I also like to have a "comfort level" of knowing that in case something happens I can turn around and get back what I've put into the car. Some of the other cars I have, I know will appreciate if I put money into them. I just don't see that happening with the 4kq. So now I've come to a point were its no longer practical to have the car sitting around. I'm not 100% sure I'm going to sell it just yet. I'm looking into buying a house now and settling down and all that happy stuff so I need to consolidate some things. Plus, my Rustang SLO-BRA seems to be consuming more and more of my time......

Not fixing, simple mods and just keeping it clean, etc...

What would you guys say my 4KQ is worth? It runs and drives good. The car has been sitting for a few months covered under my bro's carport and it fired right up the other day. It's got just over 130K miles, so it's still a baby. Interior is in really nice shape except the back seat piping came off in two places when I changed out the struts. No cracks or tears anywhere, typical Audi. I haven't found any leaks except for the stupid oil fill cap. The tornado red is pink once again, but I know that a good buff job will bring the shine back out. The car does need wheel bearings; I have all the parts to do it, but just haven't had time to install. I'm hoping to get it done soon. Honestly I can't think of anything the car needs to be driven on a daily basis. Exhaust (magnaflow muffler), tires (OEM wheels), brakes, struts (KYB), tie rods, timing belt, radio, speakers, are all done within the past 2 years and I haven't put much mileage on it. I've maybe put 5k miles in the past 2 years, driving the truck everyday now. There's no rust anywhere on the car. Everything works on it. Only the heated seats are hit or miss. Some days they work, some they don't. I hear the relays clicking so I'm guessing the elements may need some attention. It could probably use motor mounts and other bushings.

The pictures below were taken last year after I had started buffing parts of it out.

<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v332/pjm99/1985_audi_4000_s_quattro.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting"></a>

<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v332/pjm99/audi_back.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting"></a>

My future plans were to repaint the car in OEM Tornado Red base/clear with a hint of some sort of pearl in the clear. Remove the door moldings. Convert the headlights to the 1984 quad beams. I was going to go with a spoiler-less trunk and I was going to put in some special red taillights I got from Paul Fern.

I also wanted to get Ronal R38 (pictured below) 15" or 16" wheels with Audi center caps.

<img src="http://www.ronalusa.com/wheels/opt-images/r38/r48_4_lug.jpg">

Aside from the wheels and paint supplies, I have all the parts to do this to the car, just no time. I also wanted to get a turbo engine in there at some point as well as maybe lowering the car and getting better struts. I have KYB on there now. But that would be way over my budget and again time. Plus my health has declined a great deal in the past few years so I'm limited on what I can do on my own at this point. Who knows, maybe I can get this stuff done and I'll just enjoy the car.

So, what do you think its worth as-is? Or someone talk me out of selling it.....lol

Default Don't sell it!

From a $$$ point-of-view, your car is now going to start appreciateing in value. Especially since you've kept it from "beater" status by your past efforts.

If you've the space to garage the old boy, then do it! You can take him out every once in a while, and really enjoy the '85 "Fahrfergnugen" and impress your friends by your knowledge and the feel of the ride. If you keep it , say for another 10 years, then you can sell it to someone for much more that you'll get for it now.

Another option [one that I'm considering] is to get it as right as you can, and farm it out to a needy family member. In my case, I've one daughter in the deep south that could use a good 2nd car. Anyway, it's worth thinking about.

Default I don't have a garage space for it.......

when I buy a house, I will probably need to stop renting a storage unit that I currently have. The car would have to sit outside with a cover.

Default Id say 1000-1200

Sounds like a fair price for the car. But I havnt seen it in person, driven it, etc. So my guesstimate may be a bit off.

Default A lot of dudes seem to be bailing on their 4000's this month.

It's a nostalgia thing to hang on to these old jems from the 80's They were my to die car back then, I had a rabbit. You can get a pretty nice 1995 car for 2 or 3K though - so it all becomes a dilema. That mustang sounds cool for sure.
Paul - I saw your car at Grey Rock with Paul Fern. Seemed nice. I'm out of the country all july - but I might be dumb enough to make your car my 7th car (only because what am I really going to do with seven cars?). Regardless - good luck.

Default agh, we'll see, my bro (surprisingly) keeps trying to talk me out of it....

he's offered to do the paint/body work himself. He wants me to at least finish the stuff that I already have parts for. We'll see, I have to rehang to new exhaust and do the wheel bearings at least before I sell it.
