Default Introducing Team 6.003K

Hello all,

I just wanted to let you know that Team 6.003K is building up a 1985 Audi 4000S for the 2003 Grassroots Motorsports Challenge. We may chime in from time to time hoping you can all help us out with technical questions, leads on parts, etc.

The Grassroots Motorsports 2003 Challenge for those unfamiliar with it is a competition to see who can build the best handling, fastest accelerating, and best looking car for a total budget of $2003 including the base car itself. The competition will be in Gainesville Florida in April of 2003.

If you'd like, please visit our humble beginnings of a website documenting the build up and testing of our trusty 4KS.

So far all that's been done to the car is the resolution of a couple vacuum leaks, and the gutting of the interior for weight reduction. Future plans include addressing the stock suspension bushings, lowering springs, tires, and a motor swap (probably a 1.8 16V setup similar to the Audi 80 16V in Europe, hey the 16V may not be a US Audi motor, but the price was right, free!)

My fear with a 5K turbo is the ancilary stuff would add up fast. The 16V is a bolt in for the 8V 4cyl, with only the downpipe from the exhaust manifold having to be custom. The fuel injection on the project car is already CIS-E with TCI-H ignition which are a perfect match for the 1.8 16V. Accessories / other necessities should just swap right over (alternator, waterpump, belts, radiator, motor mounts, etc.) If the rules allowed more $ in the budget a 5cyl turbo would be perfect. Unfortunately, we have to plan on at least $300 or so going to bodywork since the paint on the project car needs replacing.

Default BTDT, good luck!

I painted the winning $2002 car.
I'm not coming back to $2003, I'll be happy to help long distance via this forum. Keep us posted. Reliability is key...lots of cars (including ours) failed to make it through the weekend (we got really lucky). Put it together, test it and work the bugs out, then pull it apart and paint/clean it up.
It's a fun event. Don't post stuff on the GRM message board though, they will visit your site and accumulate ammunition to protest or copy you!
