Ok, so its been around 5 degrees here at night and in the morning when I go to work. I start driving away this morning and hear this awful noise coming from the instrument cluster area, it sounded familiar too; I had heard it last winter too, sometimes. The sound is like an oscillating noise, and it starts at 20mph and gets progressively louder as speed increases, but levels off at a point, and it goes away when your below 20 and slowing down.
Im thinking the speedo cable is making a racket, sound like a decent assumption? Anybody else have this odd noise? Hard to put into words what it sounds like, but it aint pretty. Between my noisy windshield wipers when cold and this noise when cold, it makes for a noisy driving experience![Smile](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Any BTDT?
Mike

I talked to a speedo repair man years ago and he says that the cables need to be lubricated every once in a while or they'll screw up. My MG's speedo makes a racket until it warms up and I'm just guessing its old and out of lube.

Now that it's cold out, it's howling.
Sometimes.. If you loosen the instument cluster (take the cover off, then just loosen the two screws that hold the cluster to the dash) and slightly change the angle that the cluster sits at (doesn't need much), the speeedo cable tilts a bit differently.
That can sort of change the sound. You may be able to find a spot that the noise is not so bad. A trial and error kind of thing..
Lubricating the speedo end of the cable can't hurt either, can it?

But everything is okay once it warms up again. But not so far this year.
4 above zero here right now while central Canada is getting the frigid stuff.
