I've heard some talk about this before (shift linkage bushing kit for 4kq)

Anyone know of a good source for a linkage bushing kit? I thought I read somewhere that the VW Fox is the same(?) but haven't been able to find a kit for either. Any advice appreciated (time to tighten things up a bit).

IIRC the only real bushings or parts to replace are the rods on top of the transmission. The 4cyl cars have other bits that are replaceable, like the VW's.

Like I did, however it wore out pretty quick, and had to r/r with the old shifter [and new bushings in it]. Sorry I don't remember what company made the thing. I got new bushings from the local VW stealership parts dept... they actually had them on the shelf! I took my bentley in, matched the numbers with their EKTA program, and walked out $19.xx poorer, with parts in hand.

Which is what you'd replace for the short shift kit. Im more so wanting to replace the rubber ball on the trans itself, and any other rubber bits that may be part of the linkage down there (haven't actually looked to see whats all there..)

A few dog bone bars, which are adjustable are pretty much what make up the linkages. Also if you look at ETKA there really arent many parts to replace to improve the shifter feel. If you are feeling adventerous you could splurge for an 034 SS piece, but I know you werent necessarilly looking for that.

I expected it to have the same style of linkage as my old 16v jetta (more joints and connections then any car should ever have).
When i drove cgtturbo's 84 the shifter felt nice and tight, nothing sloppy, but wasnt a short shift kit. Im guessing if theres nothing to tighten and not much to replace then it'll be the 1 ball bushing that sits on top of the trans making it loose?

this is the bushing I'm guessing you're talking about:

To the best of my knowledge, these are NLA.
Other things that might contribute to the sloppy shifter are dying motor and tranny mounts. I noticed that once I replaced the mounts on my 4000, the shifting was night and day. Car used to fight w/ me to go into certain gears, but once I swapped the mounts things moved a lot easier.
Like Mikey said, the linkage is real simple on these cars. It's the long linkage that goes from this joint pictured above to the shifter, and then a dog bone that goes on the tranny to a ball on the shift linkage.

I have installed it on multiple cars and can assure you it will eliminate most or all of the slop you are feeling. One car I used one on would barely shift into some of the gears due to how worn the ball socket and plastic OE shifter were. Swapping over to the 034 unit makes the car shift and feel like brand new. It's really amazing how big of a difference it makes. Plus you can reduce your shifter throw or keep it stock, what ever floats your boat.
Don't mean to beat a dead horse as I have brought this up over and over in the past, it's just a great product that it seems like hardly anyone on here buys due to the sticker shock. Buy one and you won't be disappointed. If you keep the car for another 2 years, it's only $7.92/mo for buttery smooth perfect shifts!
