Is lifter tick bad (harmful) or just annoying? Oil Change Recomendations?

Why does my engine have a ticking noise , if I let it sit for awhile it stops, the
My 2009 Silverado has a ticking sound, that comes from the top of the motor.
it doesn't stop and continues while driving after start up .drove it back home and let it sit for awhile ,30 or 40 minutes .started it again and no ticking was heard ,drove it and the continuous ticking begin again
