Muffler GONE!

Muffler GONE!
Well, the rear muffler finally rotted out. For now, I decided to go the CHEAP route and the shop is going to cut off the muffler and tail pipe, and install a pice of properly bent pipe in it's place. No rear muffler. Anybody else running a setup like that? How's it sound? Obnoxiously loud?
Eventually, I want a nice black finished rear muffler with twin tips. Any thoughts on a good, free flowing rear that won't be too loud that comes in black and can take tips?

Re: Muffler GONE!
I ran my '82 for about 4 years without a rear muffler. Wasn't real bad, until I had to gut my cat converter because it was rattling inside so bad I couldn't stand it. Then things got loud!

I ran a similar setup on my fox for 11 years. 2 resonators and no muffler, sounded great
not obnoxious but throaty!.. reasonable at idle but louder at full throattle. Expect a bit of crack in the sound until engine is hot as there tends a bit of unburnt gas igniting in the exhaust until then.

I have the same exact setup...
I was in your exact situation. The bosal system that the PO put on was all but rusted out. The flange at the Cat was gone, as was the front half of the muffler. I couldnt really afford a whole new setup, so what I did was had the shop put in the new cat and then let me hear it that way before I decided what to do about the muffler.
I ended up with the hi-flow cat, bosal resonator, and no rear muffler... Just 2.25" pipe. I really like the sound of it. The shop did a kind of shakey job bending the pipe and it hangs a little lower than I'd like. But it sounds great! Even my dad (who is a V8 guy) says it sounds tough! Only at 3000 rpms it gets a little loud in the cabin, but I like it!

Re: I have the same exact setup...
Yeah, Brads system sounds great! I took the rear muffler off on my 5k I think its too loud though. I just took the (still in great condition) rear muffler off the flange, now exhaust exits next to the rear wheel. (car isnt on the road yet, so I wont kill my self from exhaust poison ) Im still going to get a pipe bent to go in the mufflers place and connect it to the flange, hopefully it will be quieter then. So this way by using the flange, I can easily put the muffler back on again if needed. Do the CGT's have a flange that holds the rear muffler unit on ?

The sound...
is a lot like it was with the blown out muffler but quieter. Low, slightly raspy from 2,500-3,000 but not obnoxious. It used to be so loud that your ears hurt after a long drive at 65 MPH, now it's fine. It is noticable from 2,500-3,000 RPM, right where I tend to cruise at, so eventually I will put a rear muffler back on, but it's fine for now...
