My 4ks is totaled....by a door ding! F@#K!!
Got a nice little present today from a soccer mom with a 4 door Maxima. I had even parked in the far right end spot thinking this was the perfect lot to get door dinged in.
Sorry, but that wasn't enough preventative measures. Her 3 year old piled out of the right rear door and shoved it fully open, catching the high seam on my left rear door and buckling about a 3" section of the door....and leaving a wonderful white skid mark in the paint. Fortunately the "mom" is taking responsibility for it and we called her insurance right then and there.
One of the local "rip off the insurance company and the customer" bodyshops just got done writting an $1,113.00 estimate for what they say will take a week to repair.
Then they told me, "Oh, I didn't realize we'd exceeded the value and by the way, we don't work on anything older than 1990."
They say Allstate will now send someone to evaluate the car and determine how much they're willing to pay.
I'm sure this is going to be a ton of fun. Fortunately the car was completely repainted about 3 years ago, so it looks like new. I'll post an update soon.

Bummer. My guess is that based on the current NADA values for your car Allstate will offer you somewhere between $1475.00 to $1950.00 for it.
My '83 got totaled last fall and Allstate paid me a total of about $1900.00 including loss of use reimbursement.

Can you email me with some of the info you used?
If possible, anything would certainly help so I can intelligently counter and make my case should things go sideways and they start offering something silly like $500 for the thing and my choice is "take it and wind up with a "salvaged" title, or take us to court."

Here is a link to the NADA site where you can look up the value for yourself just as I did. I posted this here one time before and someone cautioned that the NADA site tried to install spyware. I've never had a problem with it though.
BTW - Based on my experience with Allstate I'm guessing that you won't have any problem. They were very fair with me.
I also had similar dealings with a company called "Direct General Insurance" recently and they were not in Allstate's league as a company.

Nad a Used Car Values computed here

Now if only it were two years older....

It would be considered a classic. For example here's what a comparable '85 would be worth... surprizing huh?

Most folks don't realize the book value is so high...
on Audi 4000s. And the Kelly Blue Book Value for most used cars is usually even higher than NADAs which is why insurance companies won't use them. What these cars cars actually sell for is another story all together. But that's the insurance industry's problem.
I recently bought an '85 4kq on Ebay for $1125.00. It's in average to poor condition. But if it were totaled tommorrow I would probably get somewhere around $2500.00 for it which is the NADA "low retail value".
As a result I have my 4kq fully insured with collision and comprehensive - not just liability. It's worth it if my car gets stolen, burns up or if some uninsured slacker hits hit.
