If the damage is more than the value of the car (actually most companies "total" a car at 90%)...they can total it. They pay cost to repair or the value of the car, whichever is lower.

For around $20.- you can get a "Ding-King" new in the box. Probally pull out the ding, and then a few more bucks a bit of touch up paint.
I just would encourage you to keep the car, even if it means dropping the claim entirely.
Maybe dropping the claim isn't a bad idea? For both you and the "inflictors" of this crime. Their rates don't go up... you keep the car, and they buy the repair parts you need.
Win-win is a good thing ususally.

If someone else is at fault, why are you getting pinalized by losing your car? You'd think it should be the other lady pays for the repair, whatever the cost (because it's not your fault).
I'd be fighting that one for sure!

I'm not loosing the car and her insurance is going to pay for the repairs along with a rental car for the duration of the repairs.
I was merely commnenting that the value of the damage exceeds, or nearly exceeds the "book" value on the car and that it may be a struggle to get the insurance company to pay full boat.
The jury's still out. I have an appointment to have the car "inspected" by Allstate next Thursday. I'm guessing that they'll assess what they think the value of the "really" is and then decide what percentage of that they're willing to kick down in the form of a check for the bodywork.

I just have to jump through Allstate's initial hoops to evaluate and valuate the car and damage. Then we go from there.
Fortunately the paint is undamaged, but there is about a 3" buckle, both in and out on either side of the upper crease that runs along the side of the body.
As door dings go........it's a humb dinger.
