Default My favorite speaker configuration in a type 85.

I'm on my third 4QK and each prior owner set up speakers unique to themselves.
Of the three variations, my favorite was the setup in which the stock front speakers were replaced with very nice Polk 3.5 inch speakers. In addition, components speakers were configured so the woofers replaced the rear deck speakers and the tweeters were placed in the pillars between the doors (see photo).
My current arrangement has Infinity components in the doors (see photo) along with 6 1/2 2-way speakers in back and Infinity 3.5's in the front. This was a much more exspensive way to go and, quite frankly, does not sound as good as the simple component tweeter in the pillar method.
I, by no means, am an audio geek but I know what sounds good to me and thought I would pass my experience on to you.
BTW, you might notice on the photo of the pillar that the prior owner put in an extra dome light (taken from a 5K) in the passenger side pillar. That was a very nice enhancement!

Default Also depends on what speakers you're using...

on my black 4kq I got a set of Japanese Kenwood speakers which were specifically designed for door mounting. I mounted them (5.25") in the door, put the matching 6x9's in the rear deck and 10 sub in the trunk. Ran it all off two amps...sound was incredible.

My current 4kq has the same sub/amp/rear deck speakers but with 3.5" JBL's TR-350-cxi's in the dash (stock location). Sound is very good, everyone in my car comments on it...but I still notice a difference. I preferred the front Kenwoods.

Default hold I'm confused.........

so you're saying get the 3.5 in the dash and 6.5 in the back and a component tweeter in the pillar? I'm considering my speakers, I think I may go with Infinity reference 6.5 2 way out back and 3.5 2 way Infinity in the dash. Crutchfield recommended JBL 3.5 2 way in the front and 6.5 2 way Rockford in the back.

I'm not sure how this would all sound with 2 2ways in the front and rear, plus if I were to add a component tweeter, don't you think the highs would be too much?

What set up would you go with, the JBL and Rockford or the Infinity Reference set? They are both priced the same.

Default oh, and I don't wanna cut my door panels

I prefer to have a stock or close to stock setup, I work in the city and park on the street. I don't want to draw too much attention. Inifinity reference has a nice subtle grille and the rockford is not to bad, has a little bling on it.

Default Agreed. Leave the door panels alone...

Get whatever brand of 3.5's you like for the front dash (anything is going to sound better than stock).
Then, get a good set of component speakers. Put the woofers where the rear deck speakers currently reside and the tweeters in the pillars.
Once again, this is the humble opinion of a non audio geek.

Default yeah, I'm a non audio geek too

I just worry that the two extra tweeter will give me too much highs. Although, I do have a bass tube with a built in amp that I can through in the trunk. I'll I'd need to do it tap into the rear deck speaker and run power to it, which I could run off the aentna. hmmmmmmmm?

Default mysetup.

MB Quart 4 inch speakers in the front. They're like Coaxial, but the HF is actually mounted on a bracket so you get the full 4" to push air on the low end. I've got similar 5.25" MB Quarts in the back.. JL audio 8" sub... not bad for a cheap setup.

Default I still have Infinity's in the front

And Im still happy with them, they are the 3.5 reference model. I have 5' round Blaupunkt speakers in the rear that are nice too.
Looking to upgrade my deck though.

Default Has anyone ever made a set of door pods up?

I bought some sculpting foam and made some pods that fit in the door pockets then come up to the height of the top of the door handle and forward to the front of the door panel. I'm hoping to be able to mold some carbon fiber enclosures that can mount to the door without having to cut a huge 6.5" hole.
Just need to learn how to mold CF or have someone else do it.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
