my new 87 4000q ... I finally own an audi!

Hello all, I am a new poster to AW forums because...well, I did't have an audi before this. After wanting to get an audi for a long time I finally found the perfect excuse: moving to LA without a car!
Not only did I get an audi, I found a "gold" nugget (it's gold): it runs great, and it only cost $400! Obviously it's not perfect (see below). I have been wanting to learn to work on cars for a long time. Now I have a great car to learn on...but I definitely don't want to screw up big because it's my daily driver. I plan to take it to a mechanic to get a professional opinion on what all work needs to be done on it. Then I want to do as much as possible of that work myself.
My question to all of you: is anyone who lives out in the Los Angeles area willing to help show me a few things about repairs? I am in Claremont, on the east side (Pomona/Ontario area). I can identify most parts in the engine, change my own oil, have replaced an ignition coil/control unit before, but haven't tried anything beyond that. Also, I would *really* like to find some sort of co-op shop--where you can go for $5-15/hour and use their hydraulic lift and tools. I know some shops allow employees to do this, but I'm not buddy-buddy with any mechanics.
More about the car for those interested: The odometer stopped at 164,999 (ha!), but the previous owner told me he thought around its 190k. It spent most its life in Denver, then ~2 years in Aspen, CO. (I'm from Boulder, CO and a skier, so that's a plus for me. Even though it was hard on the car, it's good history.) Anyway, it needs new shocks, possibly a wheel bearing, and the dash is all smashed up. Also, the speedometer doesn't work right (wobbles) and it seems the engine temp sensor is disconnected/non-functioning. OXS light is on for engine service checkup too. Engine/clutch/drivetrans all seem solid to me--it drives really nice.
Anyway, I'd love to hear back from people, threads or email.

Congrats on the good find! Depending on how "smashed up" your dash is, you can reset the OXS light easily so that red glow isn't staring at you anymore:
First, take off the instument cluster cover. You sort of have to look in behind it...it's easiest to look through the windshield unless you have a bendable neck.
Look for holes (if I remember correctly, I think they're square-ish) near the top of the instrument cluster, if the light has never been reset, you will have to break a tab-thing off. Insert the poke (small screwdriver, allen wrench) and push to reset.
Good luck!
