Default My warped exhaust manifold

I had my car to the garage for a quick tune up about 3 months ago. When I picked it up he told me that my exhaust manifold was warped but would be fine for the time being. Now my exhaust is going out along with varius other things. So now it is time for a complete new exhaust. I've read on here how the bolts and studs tend to break off when removing the manifold. So my question is should I hope for the best and try to replace it myself, or pay the garage to do it, and how much would it cost me. If the studs or bolts must me drilled out i'm guessing an arm and both legs. Anyone had to have this done?

Thanks for any feedback

Usually the warping manifold is what snaps the studs off (at the back of the engine). Easy enough for you to check and see if any are currently broken. If they are, I'd farm it out. You don't want to screw up a head trying to fix it in the car.

Default I can't tell if it's warped by looking at it...

I just went out and serched the exhaust manifold for about 20 minites looking for the warp. He said it's warped at the 5th cylinder but I can't see it. Nothing is snapped or anything. The guy is a honest mechanic and always does good work for me, I just can't see it. He said that it would be good for a while yet and that I could keep drving it before it would need the work done, that was about 3 months ago. Now my whole exhaust needs replacing and I was wondering if it would be worth it to have it fixed now? The car is an 83' 2.1L and runs good aside from this. I would like to upgrade the exhaust to a 2.25 in one. I know I need the quattro downpipe, but do I need the manifold too?

If it's warped, you have an exhaust leak at the head, and if you have a leak you most likely have a snapped stud. That's how it works. I thought perhaps you could feel/see a loose or missing stud back at #5.
The quattro downpipe will not work without the quattro manifold.

Default Yeah the stud is snapped : (

After I contorted my hand to fit up in to feel it. The stud is snapped but still stuck in. I couldn't see or feel a large gap though. Non the less I still need to have it fixed. Anyone know how much it would run me to have it done at a garage?
