I run the Pirelli "Winter Carving" for the winter. I have gotten 2 seasons out of them and still have above 50% tread. Their a directional pattern and still perform well on the pavement and kick *** w/ quattro in the snow.
I also have a brand new set of Blizzaks mounted on 14in steelies if your interested in those you can pick them up when you swing through.
Do not get the Kuhmo 712s!!! The road noise is horrible when the tread gets low.

No, I don't plan on running seasonal tires. I think I'm going to get the Michelin "Energy MXV4 Plus" tires.
Thanks for the offer, though, about the Blizzaks :-)

You pay a lot for that name brand and I think there are better tires out there for less money. Do some reading at Tirerack.com and see what you think.
Yokohama Avid T4's are an excellent tire and probably half the price of the Michelins.
Goodyear Assurance are what our A6 wagon came with, and so far, I like them. They haven't seen water or snow yet though and they were probably 100-something each new.

that this is the most helpful group of people on the planet.
By FAR this is the most active forum on the internet...
I don't think any of us know why we love 'em like we do, but somehow they 'fit'... They're never the center of attention like a Porche, but we DO stand out in a crowd.
Have fun!

Get them siped. They are quiet and do fine in the rain. So far the best all season tire for the $$ I have put on the 4kq or 80q

I just put a set on a FWD '95 A6 Sedan I was "building" to sell. Man were they nice. Firm ride on a 4,000lb car, and dead quiet.
I've got 'em on my VW Rabbit P/u and had sets on the wife's previous 2 cars (after trying a set of spendy Michelin's)
I'd have them on the Avant, but the gal we bought it from just put a set of the Goodyear Assurance's on it. Seen these badboys? Can't wait to try 'em out in the snow and rain...but, 90-something each plus shipping from Tirerack.

kumho ecsta asx. Talked my son into putting them on his A4. I am impressed with those too for noise and performance in the wet and slight snow. I run yokos on my cars. If you are not putting cars on the track, siping is nice too.
