Newbie question about UK fuel types
Hi,
I have a 1985 Coupe GT 2.0 litre, I've tried running it on Optimax and BP Ultimate, as well as some generic super unleaded fuels. Is there a consensus on what is the best fuel to use on a car of this age? Personally it SEEMS to run better on Optimax, but I don't know whether this is damaging the engine.
Many thanks.

Rather than discussing brand names, what are the octane numbers?
Unless someone makes a fuel now with a less than 87 octane, it is unlikey you will damage the engine. I'd worry more about clean fuel and a good fuel cleaner. 9especially as someof hte Uk engines were carborated.

Re: Rather than discussing brand names, what are the octane numbers?
The octane number of Shell's new V Power is 97.
The reason I'm bothered is that I get a lot of pinking/rattling on acceleration, especially up hills and so thought it might have something to do with using modern unleaded.

Well pinging onhills can hurt your engine, but.
A couple of things you can do. One run a good combustion chamber cleaner through your engine, you may have some carbon build up in there.
Retard your timing a bit.
It is difficult to get too specific without knowing which engine you have.
The old leaded fuels helped prevent pre- detonation and lubricated the valves, at the cost of being increadibly toxic. The modern equivalents work just as well (and hopefully are less toxic) and definetaly not the problem.
Just be sure you are getting clean gas from a reputable dealer. You don't need the sludge from the bottom of a 40 year old tank going through our cars or old stale fuel.

Re: our US cousins have different fuel ratings
to Europe and I believe the specific gravity of the fuels is also different.
Optimax is about 98octane
Tesco Superunleaded is 99.
I run our A4s on Tesco super and my old 80 Sport ( 4000) also, no problems at all.
