Default Is the NG engine (1987.5) interferance?

Will the engine self destruct if the timing belt goes?

No. It is labeled as a non-interference engine from the factory.

However, there have been arguements by some that if the belt breaks at high speed/rpm's it can cause damage...

I have seen an NF & NG engine with broken timing belts and they were fine after a new timing belt job. Both were broken at intermidiate highway speeds...
