Default Odometer Repair?

Ok.. So I'm trying to get the speedometer apart, so I can 'try' and repair the slipping gear (or whatever it is that makes the odo stop counting yet the speedo still works). I don't have the OXS sensor box either..

It all looks easy enough to get at, once I get the front faceplate off. But I CANNOT figure how to get the speedometer speed pointer off to allow the removal of the front faceplate! (I'm almost at 500,000 Km, and want to see it turn over..)

Any hints?

(No, I don't want to use a BIG hammer either! :-)

Default Carefully, thats zee word of da day :D

I never took any speedo needles off until this past July, but fixed the odometer with all faceplaces "in place". I used a good ol fork and very carefully pried the needle off. Then removed the tiny screws and off it came. Keep this in mind though. I had a large miscalculation of the speedo when I first put the needle back on, and I was pretty sure that I put it on in the correct spot I took it off. I had to take the cluster out of the car and move the needle a few times after a highway check of the rpm's and speed.
The odometer in my 4kq still doesnt work all the time! When its hot or the sun has been beating on the dash the odometer doesnt wanna work, but when its cold, works perfect. I fixed my 85's odometer, and it works flawlessly, just like everything else on the car.
Odometers on these cars are hit and miss, I gave up trying to repair mine.

Default I think those small marks on the edge of the faceplate help you line up the needle.

I think you have to lift it over the stop to let it rest naturally to line up with those marks.

Default Those marks help, but

I used them and my needle is still a little shy at 65mph. I just keep the needle right where the speed limit is and without knowing it I'm going a safe 5-7mph over!

Default I can't say that mine's much more accurate, either.

I've tried fiddling with the needle, but never seem to get it right. Now I just time myself over 10 miles, say, at 55, 60, or 65 and compute that average speed. Then I just try to remember how much it's off.

Default The marks may help, but how to get the needle OFF?

Ok. so the marks may help put the needle ON, but how do you get the needle off?

I noted that there is a small mark on the bearing (way down inside) on which the needle pivots. On my speedo, when that mark is straight down, needle is at 10. That should let me get it set close on reassembly, once I figure how to get that needle OFF!

Thanks..

You have to carefully pry it off. I got a small screwdriver and a cloth to leverage against on the faceplate. You have to put the screwdriver right on the bottom of the collar that goes on the post.

Default Thanks!

I guess it may take more force that I thought..

Good thing I have a 'spare' odo to practice on!

Default When I did my gauges I found the best way to get the speedo accurate was...

To put the needle back on just on the other side of the pin (near the zero mark) and then to carefully lift the needle over the pin. I'm doing 80mph at 3800rpm same as always.
