Default Odomter/Trip odo problem

The speedo on my 84 4000S 2.2 works fine, but both the odometer and trip odo work sporadically - usually the trip odo gets stuck after a few kms and then neither one turn (making the mileage on this car anyone's guess)

I had the instrument cluster out today and checked that the speedo cable was tight, but apart from that I'm not sure if there is anything I can do to get the odo working since I presume there are safety measures inside the guts of it so it can't be tampered with.

Has anyone had to fix this? Any ideas? Thanks.

Default I was quoted $205(!) from a place to fix it....

Came with a warranty for one year though. I still think thats a bit excessive. If I wasn't afraid of screwing up the speedometer needle, I would have fixed it already.

Default that's about half what I was quoted...

I just spent the $40 and got a new gear and fixed it.

It's really not hard to repair/replace the gear.

Default I use the free fix

Well, minus my time of course. I always just remove the cluster from the car and the casing. I dont touch the speedo or needle at all. The problems Ive had are where the worm gear has stopped making contact with another gear. So, I push the gear back into place and hold it there with a small metal clip. This keeps the gear from backing out. I also eliminate the OXS counter gear, which helps.

You could have it professionally fixed, but I always found it fun and easy to mess with the clusters myself.
