Default oil opinion

I'm just curious about your oppinions on what oil to use. I've had excellent luck with amsoil (like bringing my engine back to life after I was mean to it. I know alot of people hate it, and I saw one person's pic with a motul logo, and I've never heard of them. Anyways, what do you guys think?

Default You'll get varying opinions here...

If you search, there has been talk of this before. Some prefer (and swear by) synthetic, it leaks for others (like me). I don't like synth in my 4kq, and I use a regular higher-mileage formula oil. That being said, I like Amsoil in my other car, but it's too $rich$ for my 4kq's blood since she'd leak it right out anyway. Audi Junkie often posts very informative posts about oil. Search for those too.

Default Ain't that the truth!

I use 20w50 year around, and I don't use synthetic. I'm not a purist about oil manufacturers, however many here are...

Passion is generally a good thing....

Default M1 0W-40

My engine has new seals, so it doesn't use much oil. I've been using it in my A4 and my 4000. I'll switch my 944 over to it at the next change. I'm trying to go 8-10k miles between changes. Porsche and Mercedes use this weight of M1, so I figure it can't be all that bad. The new M1 Truck/SUV 5W-40 sounds good, too. It's a match for Delvac 1 (diesel oil), but I'm sure it would work fine for gas engines.

Default Re: oil opinion

I use regular old Mobil. 10W30 in the winter months and 20W50 in the spring/summer.
Synthetic is too much, and doesnt gain me anything, so I just save my cash.

Default My pick for good cheap oil...

Mobil Delvac 1300S in 15w40. This is a diesel oil with gas engine rating, so it's excellent for engine cleanliness and designed to go a long time between changes. Best of all, it's about $6/gallon at Wallyworld. I run 5k intervals in my 4kq.

$0.02,
Robert

Default M1 15w-50

All I use in my beasts is M1 15w-50. I've used Amsoil but its very hard to get and M1 you can buy by the 5 quart container at Wal-mart for $20. If M1 is what Porsche and other premium car makers put in their cars from the factory, I think its good enough for my old-*** Audis. There are oil test going on that you can check out so Google it and see for yourself.
IMO, the oil filter studies are more interesting than the oil studies. Check this link out.

Filter Test
