This is what every enthusiast would like. I think within the next 5 years we will see lots of the car companies coming out with "low cost performance cars". Low cost meaning in the low 20's. For example, dodges new SRT-4 priced like at 19k. The performance is there, and has lots of potential! VW will do it, they pretty much have (vr6 gti's\1.8t). However I can't see audi doing it.

http://www.dodge.com/srt-4/index.html</a

Watching old rally videos with the quattro's and Miss Mouton at the wheel sure are sad. That all happend what, in the early-mid 80's? Our cars were new back then! Think about it, its kinda strange....

Also the 300 horse is the HP# they have to stick to for the class they use it in for WRC. The 2.5 is in the Legacy, Outback, Impreza non WRX, and Forester. But, yes if you put a turbo on the 2.5 you could easily see over 400 horse.

You are correct though, all the other WRXs are 2.0 litre engines. The engine in my rally car is also a 2.0 instead of the normal 2.2L I'm aware of the rally class restrictions. The new STI is a 2.5L engine. Probably the same block with dished pistons for lower compression, higher boost and a different torque producing crankshaft.
Impressive work by Subaru. That little car with a few tweaks and new chips should be an absolute handfull to anything on the track.

Audi doesn't need to compete with Subaru and Mitsubishi. Their competition is BMW and Jaguar. Mitsubishis are so poorly made it's funny, and Subaru's quality has gone down the tubes lately as well. In order to offer a 300hp AWD car for $30k or less, you have to cut corners; the interior, creature comforts and general overall build quality on these cars is going to be absolute crap. Do you really want that for Audi? Not everyone has to compete with everyone. Audi already has their $25-30k cars in the A2 and A3; it's too bad they aren't available in the states. Granted, they're no competition for the STi or Evo VIII, but that's not what they're about. Audi has always been about building reliable, excellent quality cars, and considering their extreme standards, I'd say their prices are already reasonable. Sure, they're expensive compared to some, but you have to remember: Ultimately, you get what you pay for. As for the baby Lambo, it is going to have an Audi-developed V10, and will probably have an Audi sister, if it doesn't come on the market with four rings in the grille.

The 5v combustion chamber affords a more complete and efficient fuel burn, partly because of the shape, but mainly because the spark plug is in the direct top of the chamber. This allows higher compression ratios to be used, plus the 3 intake valves flow much more air than 2. The tuning potential of this type of engine is just incredible; I really think VAG underrates their engines. Grassroots Motorsports put a GTI 1.8T on a dyno, and it read 170hp at the wheels. On a 180hp engine? Something doesn't add up.
