My 4KQ is not running well at all. It is starting poorly and is misfiring big time. When I rev it there is all this noise coming from the fuel distributer...where the intake boot fits on. The best way I can describe it is a thunking sound...it is pretty loud. The car is running rich too I think...plugs are all black. The ignition system should be good...new wires, cap, rotor, etc. Seeing as the noise is coming from the intake I am thinking that is the problem! Once in awhile it seems to run ok for a bit and then starts doing it again. Could it be backfiring into the intake? I am so frustrated! Any help is appreciated!

Have you adjusted the plate or seen if it's coming loose? That's the only thing I can think of that would make it thunk ond probably run rich like that.

If the bottom spring was broken it could make some noise as well but would run too lean.

Those are sort of the only things in there that could make noise.

I did check the plate and it seems fine...isn't loose or anything...it is really weird...

check the hoses around the valve cover and also the intake boot very carefully.

check all of your grounds, i was running way too rich and i have a ground wire come off of the intake manifold.
