My dad's car, which I used while visiting for Thanksgiving, makes this awful rattling noise on bumpy roads, especially from the right rear of the car. He says he had shocks and bushings replaced, but it still rattles especially if there are any passengers in the rear seat. Could it be from the shock tower mount? Where can I order new mounts from? Is there something else that tends to fail?

A-arm bushings, diff mounts, shock bushings, tie rods...you name it. That's part of the downfall of this car...too complicated for it's own good.

I have an occasional rattling or groaning noise from the passenger rear tire section of my '84 4000S also.
It happens mostly when turning right at lower speeds.
The car never makes any sounds at highway speeds.
The sound did get a bit louder recently after I had to add air to the tire. I didn't add much, maybe 10 psi. We had a recent cold snap.
I've had three different mechanics look at it when it was in the shop for other things. They couldn't find anything wrong.
To me, it sounds like a pipe or wheel is rubbing against something. I doubt it's the tailpipe since it was recently replaced.

Yeah, it's when you get rattles from stuff falling off and then running OVER it, then you have problems...
I've got some noises from the back of my 87 4kq too, but my mechanic says everything looks pretty good including the bushings, so far I live with it and replace the serious stuff that fails. The cold weather makes everything a bit more rattly. Dash is blissfully silent, though...
I'd do the usual runthrough, including the bushings on stabilizer bars too. The diff makes its own distinct "thump" if those bushings are shot, and it happens on abrupt power application/retardation.
