I woke up this morning to take my brother to school. I got in the car, 86 4000csq, started it, and reved the engine, while reving the engine I noticed this really loud, high pitched whine. It almost sounds like turbocharge whine but much louder. I can hear the noise while acclerating and holding steady speed while driving. The noise gets louder as the rpms get higher, and gets lower when the rpms drop. I dont mind the sound, it actually sounds kind of cool. But I dont want there to be some horrible engine problem.

Or powersteering pump or waterpump. Anything that is connected to the crank. Check belt tensions and see if any are loose.

After having the tech quickly listen to it, he suggested WP, but I didnt believe that for a minute. Then I was told by an individual that it was my alternator, bad bearings. That wasnt it.
Then when CuatroKoop came to visit me one day, he alerted me that (I forget what it was), a pully or something of that nature was rubbing against something else. It made the noise at idle, then of course increased as speed increased, but it wasnt audible above 3000rpm.
Not sure if that helps, but check things around the "pully section" while the car is at idle.

place the blade end near where you think the noise is coming from and put your ear on top of the handle, works almost as well. learned from old mechanic.
