Default rough idle when warm

85 4ksq: Starts fine when cold. When at normal operating temps I shut the car off and leave off for about 10 - 15 minutes. Go to crank and she starts, but idling very rough. Give it gas and it bogs, stalling sometimes. After a few minutes I begin to drive and it runs great. Any thoughts on what could be causing rough idle when engine is warm?? Thanks for the help.

Default Underhood temps?

I know the after-run fan will kick on to cool the underhood temperatures if the engine is warmed up. If it's not doing this, that may be your problem. The 4kq's have a 2 speed fan, high for normal radiator cooling and low after the engine is shut off. Check for operation.

Default My fan works...and the temp is always normal....

Its just when I run the car for a while, turn it off, then turn it on again about 5 mins later. It starts up, idles rough(with a couple of loud "knocks" when the RPMS hit 200-300), then it will just die. Not much of a problem, just irritating sometimes

Default Oh, then no...

The only time my fan comes on is when the temp gauge hits a certain point (I forget how high though on the gauge). It never comes on after the car is turned off. The thermoswitch for the fan is basically brand new, only about 8 months old.

Default Re: Underhood temps?

My fan only operates when engine is running (to cool radiator). It does not operate after the engine is turned off. Is there some kind of thermoswitch or sending unit that may be defective? Thanks for the advice.

Default Ok, then something is amiss then...

My fan on my 86 4kq comes on sometimes after shutdown if it's been running a while. This just cools the temps under the hood a bit so it will start easier.

Default Also..

I just noticed a horrid sound from the engine bay today. Hard to type out what it is, so its going to remain undriven for a week or so until my dad gets back. Im considering just buying a new GTI or something.....who knows
