I gave the idea similar thought when I had a '69 Alfa GTV. The rear engine/RWD conversion on those has been done with some success in Australia. The Alfa had the advantage of already having a transaxle in the rear. Most ended up using an Audi transmission for reasons of strength and the availability of a Chevy V8 adapter to the Audi unit (Kennedy Engineering).
It seemed more practical to use the complete sub frame from a late Pontiac Fiero ('87-'88). This would make the engine transverse, taking up less of the rear seat area. It would also "bolt up" to a number of GM engines, including the Northstar V8.
